The Evolution of Hand Drums

A hand drum tells us the story of the culture from which it came into existence. Hand drums marked the many historical stories of the indigenous.  African hand drums have some of the most interesting and unique designs. Most of the ancient Africans' story is related to their artful works such as musical instruments and paints. Hand drums are one of the most valuable historical items in the history that have stood the test of time while evolving into more modern instruments that encouraged the variety of music and rhythm that we hear today.

The Hand drum is one of the oldest instruments in the world. This instrument has been used before 6000 BC. Almost all cultures around the world know drums, especially African culture. In the past, Africans used drums to play music to accompany dances at traditional ceremonies, warning signs and to instruct troops to advance to the battlefield. But of course, the shape is not as good and as complete as of today's drums.

The invasion of Europe and the Middle East into Africa caused the hand drums to be well-known. Due to the advanced technology, the White people then started to create better hand drums, yet the shape and form still remain the same. As of today, some musicians and artists then made modern drums, which are commonly known as snare drums. These drums have the capacity to resonate and sound sharper than that of ordinary hand drums.

The next development in 1500 AD, Europe tried to conquer America to form a new colony. The Europeans brought Africans to trade as slaves so that European, African, and American cultures mingled. But black Africans should not play white music. Therefore, they created the hand drums out of simple materials so that they can play it as the musical instrument. Since the old times, music has become very meaningful to human life. It's always part of our life, even until today.

Looking at the black people playing hand drums joyfully to accompany songs and dances, the white then began to get interested in studying this instrument. They didn't need a longer time to master it for it's quite simple to be learned and played. They even had the thought to make hand drums look better, more attractive and displayable. The white are the first ones to develop and popularized this hand drums.

As of today, we can find and play djembe drums everywhere easily with different fonts and styles, but the basic form is still the same. Currently, the hand drum instrument is getting more advanced, if now there are guitars, piano, and electric violin then drums have been there that electrically, but the sound is not as beautiful as the acoustic drum.
